The first of a series of six integrated courses designed to develop both linguistic understanding and all round operational proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.  The series provides for individualized self-instruction and incorporates a monitored extensive reading program utilizing the self-access reading lab.

Course Aims:  The aim of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their use of the English language.  The course is an integrated skills course, and it aims at expanding the students' knowledge of grammar, increasing the range of their active and passive vocabulary, as well as developing their reading, writing and oral skills.

Course Objectives:  By the end of the course, students should be able to:

·          Recognize, define and use in context a given number of vocabulary items as specified by the textbook;

·          Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of specific morphological processes involved in word formation as specified in the textbook;

·          Demonstrate an ability to interpret a text by reading it using a variety of clues and reading skills as specified by the textbook;

·          Apply acquired knowledge of the language to produce written texts as specified by the textbook;

·          Demonstrate an understanding of spoken English through specific listening exercises;

·          Illustrate an ability to use the language orally for discussion purposes.

Grading Policy:  20% for Test 1; 20% for Test 2; 10% for Listening Test; and 50% for the Final Exam.

WebCT Course Page:  A WebCT course page will be utilized with this class and includes workbook quizzes and useful links and is available at:  < http://webct.uob.edu.bh/>.  A username and password will be provided to students to access the WebCT course page.

Attendance Policy*:  Attendance in class is mandatory.  It is the student’s responsibility to sign the attendance sheet each day of class; failure to sign the attendance sheet—even if in attendance—will be counted as an absence.  If your unexcused absences exceed 25% of the total number of lectures of the course in this semester [25%=12 classes], you will be automatically withdrawn from the course and be given a grade of (WF) which will be counted towards your GPA.  As well, you are expected to follow the syllabus and accordingly be prepared for each day's class.  This means that you must read the pre-assigned readings before class so that you will be prepared to discuss in class the subject matter scheduled for that day and answer questions related to the issues being covered.  NOTE:  TURN OFF all cell phones during class.

* Absence from class may be made up by preparing a two-page, typed (i.e. using maximum 12 point font size and maximum double-spaced text with one-inch margin on all sides), summary on the missed material scheduled to be covered the day(s) of your absence.  The summary must be in your own words and must not be copied material from the text(s), the internet, or any other source(s).  Times New Roman font is strongly recommended; however, if you use an alternative style, make sure your font does not resemble italic or bold text.  Also, Comic Sans MS font is not allowed.
